چکیده

We consider the dynamics of squeeze-out of a molecularly thin confined two-dimensional ~2D! liquidlike layer. The squeeze-out is described by a generalized 2D Navier–Stokes equation which is solved exactly for the limiting case where the squeeze-out nucleates at the center of the contact area, and where the ~perpendicular! three-dimensional pressure profile is Hertzian. We also present numerical results for the case where the nucleation is off-center. The theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experimental data by two of us for octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane. In light of our theoretical model calculations, we also discuss the spatially resolved diffusion experiments of Mukhopadhyay et al. @Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 136103 ~2002!#. Here, we obtain a puzzling disagreement between theory and experiment which requires more investigation. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1574790#

Dynamic and Static Pull-in instability of electrostatically actuated nano/micro membranes under the effects of Casimir force and squeezed film damping

In the current study, the effects of Casimir force and squeeze film damping on pull-in instability and dynamic behavior of electrostatically actuated nano and micro electromechanical systems are investigated separately. Linear elastic membrane theory is used to model the static and dynamic behavior of the system for strip, annular and disk geometries. Squeeze film damping is modeled using nonli...

Kaon squeeze-out in heavy ion reactions

The squeeze-out phenomenon of K and K− mesons, i.e. the azimuthal asymmetry of K and K− mesons emitted at midrapidity in heavy ion reactions, is investigated for beam energies of 1-2 A.GeV. It is found that the squeeze-out signal is strongly affected by in-medium potentials of these mesons. The repulsive K-nucleus potential gives rise to a pronounced out-of-plane emission of K’s at midrapidity....

The effect of water column stability on underwater oil blowouts plume dynamics and peeling height

Considering the increase in number of offshore oil production projects and for better understanding of plume dynamics in accidental underwater oil blowouts, a series of laboratory experiments in a square cross section open top basin were carried out to investigate the effect of changes in seawater stratification and water column stability on plume dynamics and peeling height.  Accordingly the o...

Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos of Microcantilever-Based TM-AFMs with Squeeze Film Damping Effects

In Atomic force microscope (AFM) examination of a vibrating microcantilever, the nonlinear tip-sample interaction would greatly influence the dynamics of the cantilever. In this paper, the nonlinear dynamics and chaos of a tip-sample dynamic system being run in the tapping mode (TM) were investigated by considering the effects of hydrodynamic loading and squeeze film damping. The microcantileve...

Boundary lubrication: dynamics of squeeze-out.

The dynamics of the expulsion of the last liquid monolayer of molecules confined between two surfaces (measured recently for the first time) has been analyzed by solving the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation combined with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Instabilities in the boundary line of the expelled film were observed. We show that the instabilities produce a rough boundary for all le...
